Avoid Fake People and NEVER Fake it Until You Make It
Fake people are those who act. Those who are preoccupied with how they’re perceived and their actions are there to affect others as apposed to better their own lives. Those who walk around on the phone with no one on the other end. Those who learn lines and recite them as naturally as they can, and those who read how to win friends and influence people.
There is nothing wrong with self improvement and trying to be a better person, but you either are or you’re not. Being fake and false is not doing anyone any good. The person being fake isn’t gaining anything worthwhile or anything that will last more than a moment. If other peoples perception of them is based on a fake act, its a false impression and soon enough they’ll be found out and returned to where they came from. Actors are entertainers, and we watch them for our amusement and to take a break. Its a mistake to presume that actors are actually who they portray themselves to be on screen. They’re not. Its all an act, their reading well thought out lines and most of their surroundings are special affects.
Some kids like to act like those they see on screen, walking like them and reciting their lines with their friends. Some sales trainers advise their staff to watch movies to learn how confident people handle themselves so “they can appear confident” as well. They suggest that until they are actually confident, they should “fake it until they make it“.
Fake people hold on to that philosophy, never actually taking the time to work on themselves mentally, psychologically, and physically so they can become truly confident without the need to copy anyone else.
Fake people look at others for inspiration instead of being the best they can be and looking within to who they are. With every action they take, they look around to see how it was perceived and adjust accordingly. They think that wearing a six pack t-shirt is the same as having a real six pack. This is not a good way to live your life. Its a waste. Its a waste of the opportunity you’ve been given to live an incredible life, to enjoy everyday living authentically, and becoming who you are capable of being without faking or acting in anyway.
Fake it until you make it is the notion that if you act confident, enough doors will open for you until you actually become confident enough so you don’t need to act anymore. This is actually false. Doors may open for you initially, but as soon as the act dries up and they realize you’re an impostor, the door will close just as firmly as before with some additional locks just in case you try again. You can’t act your way through every scenario that may arise and fake it until you get what you want. You may pick up some scraps and some of the low hanging fruit, but the real juicy stuff will always be out of reach.
Competence is the only way you can achieve real success. Competence is defined as the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. This ability is not a skill picked up from watching others or reading a book. It comes from repeated action and the knowledge gained from failing and not giving up. As we’ve mentioned in the blog before, patience and perseverance are necessary tools in building competence. When you become competent in something, most if not all outcomes have been actually lived through and accomplished. There is no need to fake anything. You have the knowledge, you have the experience, and the competence to complete what you set out to do to a high standard. No fakery or acting is involved in any way and your ability is built on solid foundations, not on a house of hard’s that can crumble at any moment.
Fake it until you make it is used by people who want to use you. They don’t want you to take the time to actually learn anything and improve yourself. They just want you to throw yourself into situations and use probability to get results. Being around such people for a long period of time can be a detriment to you. You will believe that being fake is a way of life and as long as you can keep the fake persona going with coffee, cigarettes and other boosters you’ll be fine.
You don’t need to be fake. The only thing you have to do is live authentically at all times. Being true to what you want to do, how you feel, and what you think is the right thing to do. You will fail and not always get what you want, but you will surely learn and respect yourself more for trying. Putting on a mask of fake success everyday in the hope that one day you will achieve it is too much work for nothing. Its far better to take the time to learn what you need to learn and go out there and apply it authentically. Gain the knowledge, work on your spiritual and mental defects that hinder your happiness, and keep yourself healthy at all times.
Don’t fake it until you make it. Never be fake. Be authentically incompetent and learn your way up. Don’t pretend, don’t act and don’t hang around those who do.
