1. 1883 eruption of Krakatoa

What is the loudest noise you’ve ever heard. It could be an air plane taking off or a loud thunderstorm, but nothing will compare to how loud the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was.

The sound made by the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883 was so loud, it ruptured eardrums of people pver 40 miles away. The sound is believed to have travelled around the world four times and it was clearly heard 3,000 miles away.

The eruption was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. At least 36,417 deaths are attributed to the eruption and the tsunamis it created.

War is deadly and both civilian and military deaths are a tragedy. The first world war, or the Great War as it was known prior to WWII, was one of the deadliest in human history.

One little known fact is that more french soldiers died during WWI than american soldiers during the entire history of the US military, including both sides of the American civil war.

They got the name because the gases and dust arein the process of creating new stars. But did you know that the Pillars of Creation haven’t existed for over 6,000 years?

Images taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope found a cloud of hot dust near the Pillars of Creation that are thought to be a shock wave produced by a supernova. The cloud suggests the supernova shock-wave would have destroyed the Pillars of Creation 6,000 years ago.

Given the distance of roughly 7,000 light years to the Pillars of Creation, this would mean that they have actually already been destroyed.

6. The Death of Sigurd the Mighty

Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He had tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but on the way home with his trophy, one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg and gave him an infection.

He later died due to an infection from the wound.
